Ask the right questions, dude!

I received an e-mail from a person in a networking group that I am leading.

He said in his e-mail that his company individual and group sales quotas have kicked in and therefore he needs to leave his participation from his BNI group in order to focus on achieving it.

I will explain this from 2 different angles.

First angle: I replied to this person, that isn’t that what the purpose of participation in a business referral group is all about? To give and receive referrals to each other. And when you give, you will also receive hence you can achieve a part of your sales quota? Yes?

But you see, and please understand my expression in frustration: some people just can’t get it.

He replied back to me via e-mail that his decision to leave was final and that he had ‘enjoyed’ his stay with his group, albeit a short one.

So there you have it. You can participate a networking group to either enjoy, or to generate results. At times both, but you have got to generate results first in order for the enjoyment to kick in. Participating in a referral generation group for the primary purpose of enjoyment is a complete waste of your money and your colleagues’ time. It’s a different mindset and attitudes when engaging in networking groups, particularly a group specializing in generating referrals.

Second angle: I wondered what would the difference be if indeed he had wrote to me: ‘Hey Riyaz, my company sales targets have kicked in, and I would like to know how I can utilize my BNI Chapter to contribute a portion into his quota? Any ideas for me?’

You see, the quality of your life depends on the quality of your questions.

If he had asked this question, then we can outline a working plan to achieve, because his mind is opened to explore possibilities.

Sigh. Double sigh. Sigh with a capital S. Some people will never get it. That’s a reality.

But yes, ask the right questions, dude, and you’ll get the right answers!

You are totally right Riyaz, however, this is people behaviour.
They cannot bring themselves to make an honest statement.
