What If by Randall Munroe

What If? By Randall Munroe

Interesting title for a book to say the least. But what got me to pick it up was the subtitle ‘Serious scientific answers to absurd hypothetical questions’.

I had never known that people do really ask questions like:

1. How safe would I be if I swam in a pool with nuclear waste on the ground of the pool?
2. What would happen if the entire population of the earth, jumped simultaneously at the same time?
3. If every person on the earth pointed a laser pointer to the moon, will it change colour?

Get the gist?

So this writer gives scientific answers to the questions, though for some question like, Would C4 strapped to a boomerang be an effective weapon? Then answer was: Why would you want a high explosive weapon fly back at you if it missed the target?

So a degree of sarcasm did accompany some very humurous analysis to respond to the person asking the question.

The most memorable one for me was how fast can I send a large file of a thousand GB on my broadband internet? The answer was, copy the file on the hard-drive, then send the drive over to the destination by Fed-Ex.

This book is recommended if you are a trainer, speaker or a teacher/lecturer in academia, so that you can pepper up your ability to tell stories, albeit with some scientific facts behind them.

Yes, a good read if you are a seasoned reader, you’ll get this book done over a lazy weekend!
